Traveling to new places can be exciting, but it can also be more expensive than expected if you aren’t careful about sticking to your budget. Unfortunately there have been times I’ve been in the middle of a trip and gone over my budget which usually has me feeling like I don’t have control over my expenses! If you’ve been a student I’m sure you know this is not the best position to be in. We should be able to travel without entirely breaking the bank if we can take note of some simple tips I’ll share below!
Research and Plan Ahead
Before going on your trip , invest time in thorough research and planning. Look for budget-friendly destinations, consider off-peak travel seasons, and explore alternative accommodation options such as hostels, guesthouses, or budget hotels. Utilize online resources and travel forums to gather information on affordable transportation, local attractions, and budget-friendly eateries at your destination.
Travel Light
Packing efficiently can save you both money and hassle during your travels. Opt for a carry-on bag to avoid checked baggage fees, and pack versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched for different occasions. Additionally, consider packing light snacks and a reusable water bottle to avoid overpriced airport or convenience store snacks.
Utilise Discounts
Always take advantage of discounts and perks available exclusively to students, veterans, seniors and even work discounts. Many attractions, museums, and transportation services offer discounted rates for individuals if you fit into any of the above categories upon presentation of a valid ID card. Be sure to inquire about discounts wherever you go, as they can significantly reduce your overall travel expenses.
Cook Your Own Meals
Eating out can quickly drain your travel budget, especially in tourist-heavy areas. To save money on food expenses, consider cooking your meals whenever possible. Book accommodation with kitchen facilities or opt for hostels with communal kitchens where you can prepare simple and affordable meals. Visit local markets and grocery stores to purchase fresh ingredients and embrace the opportunity to cook and share meals with fellow travellers.
Use Public Transportation
Utilizing public transportation is not only cost-effective but also allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture. I always enjoy taking the subway/bus/tram in different countries because it’s one of the easiest ways to feel like a local. Research the public transportation options available at your destination and familiarize yourself with their routes and schedules. Alternatively, consider walking or biking for shorter distances to further reduce transportation costs.
Embrace Free Activities
Some of the most memorable travel experiences come from exploring free or low-cost activities and attractions. Take advantage of free walking tours or museum exhibitions, visit public parks and gardens, explore local markets, and participate in community events or festivals. Engage with locals and fellow travellers to discover hidden gems and insider tips on budget-friendly activities that showcase the authentic culture and essence of your destination.
Use this tips to help you have fun abroad, for less! Bon voyage friends.
